I'm sure there will be lots of local news about how this conference is helping the St. Louis economy.

How is it helping the animals held captive in zoos?

This is just a networking vacation for Zoo Execs that make $300,000 or more a year and here in the US that would be partially funded by the taxpayers.

I'd like a list of the world's "top conservationists" who are supposed to be in attendance.

I see that Joanne Lalumiere from Granby Zoo in Quebec has been allocated a session: “Dealing with the Media: Getting the Message Out”.
Dealing with …. “ - how aggressive is that!

In her report of 2006, Winnie Kiiru had this to say – “The Granby Zoo elephant enclosure is very small, certainly not adequate for the elephants to express all of their natural behaviors and the social grouping is not appropriate for the species. Of most concern is the climate, which is completely inappropriate for elephants and may be the cause of physical disorders.” See pages 13 and 14 on this link: http://www.zoocheck.com/Reports%20pdf'...Report(REV).pdf

Maybe we should contact Granby Zoo and suggest that, in the light of Ms. Kiiru damning report of their (African) elephant enclosure, Ms Lalumiere might like to inspect a similar unhealthy exhibit at the St. Louis Zoo – she, of all the people attending this “jolly”, should be familiar with the detrimental effects of keeping elephants in a bitterly cold winter climate. Remember the photos of the icicles at the SLZ elephant pen waterfall?

So while the delegates make merry, feast and drain their glasses, the St. Louis 8 rock, sway and pace nearby in poverty in their dysfunctional world.
Shameful.

RALLY TO PROTEST
WAZA CONFERENCE

St. Louis Zoo Too Small for Elephants

Sunday, October 4, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm
St. Louis Zoo Front Entrance (across from "Living World")

Come out and rally with us on the opening day of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) Annual Conference, held at the St. Louis Zoo. The rally is in protest of the disparity between WAZA's statement of purpose and its actions. The St. Louis Zoo will host over two hundred zoo directors from around the world, some of whom have cozy ties to circuses, like Ringling Bros.

Our own St. Louis Zoo has little to brag about, with a wave of animal deaths, and an outbreak of the often-fatal EEHV. The Zoo currently holds eight elephants on one-and-one-half acres – not even close to what nature intended. Conservation is a stated purpose of WAZA, yet the Zoo is not spending money on its own elephants nor on wild elephant preservation. Instead, a whopping $5-million is going to beautify an entrance to the Zoo, complete with a 19-foot bronze elephant statue!

Two other WAZA facilities, Lowry Park Zoo in Florida and the San Diego Zoo, have been cited multiple times by the USDA for lack of such basic animal care as clean drinking water, sanitary living conditions, and adequate shelter. Since 2000, 89 elephants (including infants) have died prematurely at US zoos; of these the vast majority resided in WAZA-accredited zoos. Many zoos still use bullhooks, as circuses do, masking the reality with the euphemism "free contact." WAZA tells its members that animal displays must "focus on natural behavior" and "not demean or trivialize the animal in any way." Admirable conditions. Then, how does one explain the accreditation of Busch Gardens and Sea World?

These are only a few examples of the low standards WAZA sets. Please join this rally for the animals. Contact clarasvoice@yahoo.com for more information.

3. Exhibit Standards

All exhibits must be of such size and volume as to allow the animal to express its natural behaviours. Enclosures must contain sufficient material to allow behavioural enrichment and allow the animal to express natural behaviours. The animals should have areas to which they may retreat and separate facilities should be available to allow separation of animals where necessary, e.g., cubbing dens. At all times animals should be protected from conditions detrimental to their well-being and the appropriate husbandry standards adhered to.

THIS FROM WAZA WEBSITE.
I DON'T BELIEVE THE ST. LOUIS ZOO ELE EXHIBIT FITS THIS CRITERIA.
i don't think the zoo fits their driteria.
SO HOW ARE THEY HOSTING?
someone needs to tell the WAza.

the only behaviors i see are rocking and pacing.....

World's leading conservationists meeting in Missouri

WAZA President Gordon McGregor Reid said the association plans not only to lobby world leaders about lowering carbon dioxide emissions and other issues, but also to do more to educate the 600 million people who visit zoos and aquariums globally every year.

Organization leaders said their groups have a duty to educate people about the effects of biodiversity loss.

Jane Smart of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, a Switzerland-based network of more than 1,000 government and non-governmental organizations, said the public needs to be made more aware of the relationship between biodiversity and the well-being of humans.

Top zoo officials unite here to save species

Jeffrey Bonner, the zoo's president, said hosting the conference is a great opportunity for the zoo to show off the work it's doing in St. Louis and around the world.

IMHO Dr. Bonner is living in a dream world - SLZ is doing NOTHING to improve the standard of living of the St. Louis 8, and it can't do anything because it hasn't got the S P A C E. emo-emangry.gif
