My first response was, "Oh God, what have they done now?" LOL

I need to relax and not assume the worst.

The caption over the 2 aerial photos says this is Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque, NM, but I think the buildings show these photos to be of Calgary Zoo.

Once again, the surrounding greenery gives an illusion of natural enrichment for the elephants, but I guess it is out of their reach. Also, the trees within their compound have wire mesh round the trunks, preventing the elephants from accessing them but providing shade. So, largely cosmetic. sad.gif

Maybe the money would have been better spent on the living elephants at this zoo.
It's just like St. Louis - a 19 foot bronze statue of an (African!) elephant, while the St. Louis 8 live in poverty. sad.gif

Animal's death puts Calgary zoo under microscope

Patrons began noticing some of their favourite zoo animals were missing. Some critters died, others were malnourished or didn't receive proper veterinary care. Two red pandas died after being exposed to rodent killer. Mismanagement and miscommunication permeated from the top brass.

“Horrific” and a “travesty” is how prominent U.S. biologist Marc Bekoff described the state of the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., in the early part of this decade.

Critics respond to announcement from zoo

The Calgary Zoo's president, Dr. Clement Lanthier, is keeping a brave face amidst recent controversy and criticism over the death of a South American capybara.

"The zoo has been the target of a great deal of criticism, some of it deserved, but much of it not," said Dr. Lanthier at a press conference Saturday.
